The Big Night Has Begun

Updated: Jul 15, 2024

Amphibians began their yearly migration in Greenwood last night. From 8:30 - 9:30 PM, the number crossing Greenwood Road along Mud Pond was 14 Spotted Salamanders, 2 Spring Peepers, 1 Wood Frog, and 1 Pickerel Frog. Sadly, the Pickerel Frog was run over. All of the others were helped across the road.

Oh, and there were four large spiders crossing the road as well. They were big enough for their eyes to glint in my headlamp.

The next two nights should be even more active. Interested? Find more information here:

The final tally for April 10-12, total time about four hours. 47 Spotted Salamanders, 49 Spring Peepers, 2 Wood Frogs, 8 Pickerel Frogs, 4 Red Efts, 1 Green Frog, and 1 Eastern Red Backed Salamander. And, sadly, the tally of those killed by cars: 10 Spotted Salamanders, 14 Spring Peepers, and 3 Pickerel Frogs.

I also saw a couple dozen spiders, several moths, a few slugs, and one caterpillar. No partridges, and no pear trees.
