There's one easy way onto the preserve from the pond. Unlike most of the pond's edge, which is muddy and weedy, this spot has a shallow, rocky bottom, and it opens right into the forest.

If you land there, you'll see a sign welcoming you.
(Rae and Gerry may or may not be there).

The landing is about three-quarters of the way along the Cakewalk. Hop out of your boat, head up the hill, and you'll be on the trail at the crest of the hill. There's even a seat at that spot for you.
The easiest spot to get onto Mud Pond is a little wooded pull-off about a third of a mile north along Greenwood Road from the preserve's entrance.
(If you get to a cabin between Greenwood Road and the pond, you've gone about a quarter mile too far north along the road).
